Edith Tells All

Sunday August 11th – 2pm

Location: TBD

“Edith Tells All” is the true story of a 21 year old school teacher in Pound, who was tried and convicted of killing her father with a shoe in 1935 at the Wise County Circuit Court. Wise County became a household name. The national press swarmed Wise and the Women’s Rights Group got involved. Play is presented by Pamela Gilmer.

Wise Centennial Essay Contest

September 11th Deadline to Enter. Awards presented September 21st!

The essay could cover any event or any person that lived in Wise during the past 100 years! Other topic
includes how the wars that occurred during this time period affected the folks in Wise, other major events
– such as the depression, school consolidation, outstanding sports teams, or who built the walls around
town! Talk to your older family members, and your neighbors and your teachers for ideas!


Guidelines: Please, entries must be typed, and limited to 800 words! Please include a cover sheet with your
name, address, phone number, age range (18 and under, or 19 and over.)


Entries must be received by September 11th, 2024. Entries should be submitted to Bonnie Aker, Box 595,
Wise, Va. 24293. ATT: Essay Contest. You may also hand deliver entries to The Clapboard House, 207
West Main Street, Wise during business hours. Teachers may submit essays as a group! Prizes will be
awarded for both Youth and Adult. Each winner will also receive a Centennial Plaque.


First Place $100
Second Place $50
Third Place $25


Awards will be presented Saturday, September 21st 10 AM on the Stage at Big Glades. Winners will get a
call or an email advising them to be present, if possible. The 6 winning essays will be printed in The
Coalfield Progress!​

Centennial Celebration Opening Ceremony

2:00pm – Living History; Wise Primary and LF Addington Students will portray some of the important people who shaped the Town of Wise from the beginning. You will want to join us for a great performance of living histories and drama!

Circle of Memories

Sunday September 15th - 2pm

Gather at 411 East Main Street

Join us for an afternoon of memories, stories, and friends. We will have live music, and stories of days gone by. We will also be recognizing citizens and businesses that have made Wise what it is today. Centennial Birthday Cake will be served courtesy of the Wise Business Association.

Birthday Cake Bake Off

Monday September 16th – 5:00pm

Gather at 411 East Main Street

Show off your best baking skills and join us for a Birthday Cake Bake Off. Cake drop off will start at 5:00pm at Gather at 411 East Main Street. You will be able to drop off your cakes until 5:45pm and judging will begin at 6:00pm. Prizes will be given out on Saturday September 21st at 1:30pm during our Grand Centennial Celebration.

Ghost Tours

Join us as we walk throughout the Town of Wise and explore the hauntings around Town.

Senior Day

Wednesday September 18th – 10am

Wise Fire Department Bingo Hall

Join us for a day of bingo, prizes, vendors, giveaways, food, and live music. We will start the day with our Senior Centennial Pageant followed by lunch from KFC and bingo!

Memories of The Inn at Wise

Thursday September 19th - 6pm

The Inn at Wise

The Inn at Wise is such an iconic part of our history here in Wise. Come join us for a display of items from its earliest day and let the memorabilia take you back in time.

Snowy Evening Play

Thursday September 19th - 7pm

The Inn at Wise

Jan Thompson will be presenting Snowy Evening. A play about the conceptual visions of a college in Wise.

This is a free event.

Movie Night – Dr. Strangelove

Friday September 20th – 7pm

Black Box Theater; UVA Wise

Join us at the Black Box Theater on UVA Wise Campus for a movie night featuring Wise native, George C Scott in Dr. Strangelove.

 

Meet The CAVS

Friday September 20th – 6pm

Big Glades

Come out for a night of fun and meet the CAVS football team before their home game on Saturday September 21st! You will be able to meet the CAVS, play games, listen to music, and grab a bite to eat from the food trucks! GO CAVS GO!!!

 

Grand Centennial Celebration

Saturday September 21st – 11am – 8pm

Big Glades/Main Street

Join us for our Grand Centennial Celebration!!! At this event you will find live music, a car show, and food trucks!
